Is the COVID-19 vaccination safe?
Yes, the COVID-19 vaccination is safe. The vaccines have been available to the general public for over a year now, so a lot of data has been collected. The most common side effects include muscle soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, or mild flu-like symptoms for 24-48 hrs. There have been rare reports of blood clotting issues with the J&J vaccine and heart inflammation (particularly in teenage boys), but these occur very infrequently.
I've already had two vaccination shots, why should I get a booster?
Data from the companies that manufacture the vaccines show that immunity wanes after several months. In addition, data from hospitals has shown that people who have received the booster represent a smaller percentage of patients being hospitalized for severe disease.
Will the COVID-19 vaccinations have any interactions with the other medications I am taking?
Most medications do not interact with COVID-19 vaccines; however, patients taking any medication that may affect their immune system (most commonly prednisone, methotrexate, or chemotherapy agents) might have a reduced response to the vaccine.
With COVID making all the headlines, should we still be taking flu shots? Does Medical Arts Pharmacy provide flu shots?
Regardless of the status of COVID, we recommend that patients get a flu shot every year. It is also acceptable to get both vaccinations at the same time. Medical Arts Pharmacy offers flu shots on a walk-in basis in the store, and we also offer off-site flu shot clinics to businesses.
